Learning Disability Friendly Church Initiative

Learning Disability Friendly Churches is an initiative that is being run by Prospects to promote churches that have taken positive steps to welcome and include people with learning disabilities in the worship, work and life of the church.

When families and carers or support workers (and indeed people with learning disabilities) see the 'Learning Disability Friendly Church' sign they will know that the church members will welcome their attendance.

Churches that display the 'Learning Disability Friendly Church' sign will have:

  • Raised awareness amongst their members of the issues people with learning disabilities, their families, carers and support workers face in churches;
  • Published guidelines for welcoming people with learning disabilities (and people on the autism spectrum) into church services;
  • Equipped their welcome teams through training;
  • Trained leaders to help make the teaching and worship in Sunday services accessible to people with learning disabilities;
  • Run special ministry or small groups for people with learning disabilities.

Prospects is working with churches and volunteers to achieve this goal so that together, we can create learning disability friendly churches.
